17th Annual “Miles for Memories 5k”
Dementia affects everyone, from children and grandchildren to friends and neighbors. Mental illness is hard to deal with, but the more we learn about the various forms of dementia and their causes, the better we can use that knowledge to find help for those affected, as well as potentially learn new ways to help prevent these horrible diseases.
Since 1983, the Alzheimer Society of Washington has served Whatcom County by providing education and support groups for adults caring for those affected by dementia. Some of the unique support groups exist to support the caregiver and the person with memory loss, adults newly diagnosed or experiencing minimal memory loss, adults caring for a parent affected by dementia, as well as the Find Me Safe Network which partnered with the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Department, providing electronic technology to locate those who wander.
This Saturday, the Alzheimer Society of Washington will hold their 17th Annual Miles for Memories 5k walk/run to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s and other dementias in our community. The race will kick off at 9pm at the Fairhaven Village Green. Be sure to come and visit the vendor booths, enter to win some fantastic raffle prizes, and maybe even walk away with an award-winning race time. Prizes await for the largest team and the most money raised.
The Alzheimer Society of Washington is an organization of volunteers, family and friends of persons affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other illnesses, whose mission is to educate people about dementia-related diseases. Operating as a non-profit organization, the Alzheimer Society of Washington relies on private donations to fulfill their mission. Please donate today to help us build a legacy of education, resources, and support for those affected by Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Let them understand that they are not alone in one of the most challenging of life’s journeys!
