Earth Day 2016
Earth Day is right around the corner! In fact, this Friday will be the 46th annual Earth Day celebration since it’s inception on April 22, 1970. Earth Day began as a reminder to help everyone to stay environmentally conscious in their day to day lives and to “think green.” Every day we are all make little choices that can collectively have a huge impact on our planet. It’s up to us to be responsible for our environment and our impact upon it. That’s what make Earth Day such an important day for us all.
Here in the great Pacific Northwest we understand how very important our environment and natural resources are to us. Our community offers many great environmentally friendly opportunities that can make positive differences in the way we live our lives. One of these options that is available to all of us is the way we consume electricity. Signing up for the Green Power Program through Puget Sound Energy will ensure that your power comes from renewable resources like wind power. Another great way to think green is to collect rain water in rain barrels to be used for watering your lawn and garden in the Summer.
Boundary Bay’s Earth Day Happy Hour Celebration
This year’s Earth Day Celebration promises to be fun for the whole family. Attendees can enjoy acoustic bluegrass tunes by the Elopements, savor a local beer (or root beer), participate in fun crafts, and meet local organizations who are working to make our Earth a happy, healthy place. Kilowatt Kitty from the Bellingham Energy Prize will be making an appearance and will help the community learn more about how families can win a month of free utilities and help Bellingham win $5 million.
The Real Food Show will also be there to entertain. This dynamic educational show features comedy, juggling and interactive fun for kids of all ages. Earth Day at Boundary Bay will be an easy and enjoyable way to get the whole family involved in celebrating and helping to protect the planet.
Georgetown University Energy Prize
The City of Bellingham is ranked in the top five finalists in a national competition to win the Georgetown University Energy Prize. Whichever community reduces their energy use the most and sets a good example for others to follow will win a jackpot of $5 million. If Bellingham wins, the funds will be used on local projects that will help Bellingham save energy in bigger ways that benefit everyone.
